Engine: Yamaha F40 outboard motor Shopping experience: Spoke with the store on product availability and fit for my F40 four-stroke Yamaha motor. Confirmed fit and ordered online. Crowley Marine shipped the next day... zi ordered after five pm. My order arrived quickly and in tip top shape. What's not to like? Thanks Crowley Marine! Repair difficulty: Medium Repair time: 1 to 2 hours Repair symptoms: Trim tilt foam filter disintegrated No up or down when direct wired to good know battery and ground. Remove trim tilt motor and cylinder unit. Pulled motor and checked with jumpers to battery again. The motor ran fine in both directions. Started taking unit down and found the foam filter in the reservoir had completely disintegrated. I flushed all the oil out a couple of times while adding new Yamaha oil. I did this by manually extending the cylinder in and out. Finally the oil came out clean. Now I replaced the disintegrated foam element with a new one and added fresh oil back into the reservoir while bleeding the air out... lots of effort with a $20 fix...
