Engine: Yamaha 4 stroke 9.9 Shopping experience: Very helpful customer service. Sent what I ordered and in a timely manner. Also can track order through the whole delivery process. Repair difficulty: Medium Repair time: 1 to 2 hours Repair symptoms: Water in lower unit gear oil. I didn’t know whole lot about outboard repair but in pretty handy mechanically. New there was a lower unit seal issue because water was getting in. As soon as it was the shaft seals. They pulled the seals out myself but you’re putting your shaft at risk if you nick it with whatever tool you’re using to get them off the shaft. Apparently even the smallest scratch can wear a seal out fairly quickly underuse. But I failed to do which was pretty stupid was not pressure test and make the assumption that it was the shaft seals. The pressure test is super simple to do with a bicycle pump and a four dollar fitting which screws into the gear oil drain plug. Did the pressure test and could hear massive air coming out. Turns out it was the shifting rod seal which is a very easy one to replace on my 2003 9.9. I turned a one hour job into a four hour job. Of course he had to take the lower unit off to do this but it really wasn’t that bad I also checked the water pump while I was at it and put a new seal in that
