STARTING THE ENGINE

• Never start the engine or let it run indoors or where there is little or no ventilation. Exhaust gas contains carbon monoxide, a gas that is colorless and odorless and can cause death or severe injury.
• Before starting the engine, make sure that you have enough fuel and oil to complete your intended trip.

• Do not repeat opening and closing the throttle before starting the engine. This outboard motor has an accelerator pump. If you do so,
the accelerator pump will send additional fuel into the engine, creating too rich a mixture for starting the engine.
• If the engine fails to start, check the emergency stop switch lock plate. If the lock plate is not in position, the engine cannot be
started.
• The starter motor can operate even with the lock plate not in position; however, the engine cannot be started.

Start the engine using one of the starting procedures described below:

RECOIL STARTER MODEL

  1. Squeeze the fuel line priming bulb several times until you feel resistance.

Do not squeeze the priming bulb while the engine is running, as the carburetor may overflow.

  1. If the engine is cold:
Pull the choke knob (1) fully out. Make sure that the throttle control grip (2) is in the fully closed position.

If the engine is warm:
Align the arrow mark on the throttle control grip (2) with the start position (A). Do not use the choke.

You may need to use the choke when restarting a warm engine. If your engine does not start quickly when warm, follow the procedure for cold starting.

  1. Firmly grasp the starter grip (3) and pull slowly until resistance is felt. When you feel it engage, pull the rope sharply to start the engine. Do not release the rope when it is pulled out. Hold the rope and allow it to recoil slowly.

Never pull the starter grip while the engine is running, as the starter system could be damaged.

  1. After starting, use the throttle control grip to bring the engine to idle.

If the caution lamp remains lit while operating, check the engine oil level after stopping the engine.

  1. Push the choke knob in.

In cold weather, you may have to leave the choke knob out for a longer period of time for the engine to warm up.

  1. Warm up the engine for about 5 minutes.

ELECTRIC STARTER MODEL

  1. Squeeze the fuel line priming bulb several times until you feel resistance.

Do not squeeze the priming bulb while the engine is running, as the carburetor may overflow.

  1. Make sure that the throttle control grip is in the fully closed position.

  1. Push the starter button (1).

• Never push the starter button for more than 5 seconds, or the starter system could be damaged.
• Never push the starter button while the engine is running, or the starter system could be damaged.

If the engine fails to start after 5 seconds, wait a few seconds and try again.

  1. After starting, use the throttle control grip to bring the engine to idle.

If the caution lamp remains lit while operating, check the engine oil level after stopping the engine.

  1. Warm up the engine for about 5 minutes.

REMOTE CONTROL MODEL

  1. Squeeze the fuel line priming bulb several times until you feel resistance.

Do not squeeze the priming bulb while the engine is running, as the carburetor may overflow.

  1. Move the warm-up lever to the fully closed position.

  1. Turn the ignition key to the “ON” position.

  2. Turn the ignition key to the “START” position.

• Never move the ignition key to the “START” position for more than 5 seconds, or the starter system could be damaged.
• Never move the ignition key to the “START” position while the engine is running, or the starter system could be damaged.

If the engine fails to start after 5 seconds, wait a few seconds and try again.

  1. After the engine has started, adjust the warmup lever to maintain a stable engine speed for about 5 minutes.

If the caution lamp remains lit while operating, check the engine oil level after stopping the engine.

Cooling water check

As soon as the engine starts, water should spray out of the pilot water hole 1, indicating that the water pump and cooling system are working
properly. If you notice that water does not spray out of the pilot water hole, stop the engine as soon as possible and consult your authorized
Suzuki Marine Dealer.

• Never operate your outboard motor when there is no water coming out of the pilot water hole, or severe damage can result.
• Before setting off, be sure that emergency stop switch operates properly.

EMERGENCY STARTING

If you must get the engine running, but are unable to do so because of starter system failure or battery discharge, you can use the emergency
starting procedure to start the engine.

When rope-starting the engine, do not touch electrical components such as the ignition coils or spark plug leads. Contact with these items may result in a severe electric shock.

  1. Make sure that the motor is in “NEUTRAL” and the emergency stop switch lock plate is removed.

When using the emergency starting procedure, the start-in-gear protection system will not work. If the shift lever is not in the “NEUTRAL” position, the boat can start off unexpectedly when the engine is started, causing personal injury.
